Fibromyalgia

After only a little bit of research, I found that Fibromyalgia is a relatively common diagnois.  Painful, that it is, there are many varying degrees of pain that lead to Fibromyalgia.  There are a wide-range of symptoms that can be annoying or just down right disabling.

The ACR, American College of Rheumatology, gave two main criteria to describe fibromyalgia.  The first was pain involving all four parts of the body.  These four parts included the right side, left side, above the waist and below the waist and the pain had to have lasted for a at least three months.  (American College of Rheumatology, 1990: http://arthritis.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=arthritis&zu=http%3A%2F%2Frheumatology.org%2F)

The second criteria the ACR gave for fibromyalgia is, a physical exam would reveal the presence of pain in at least eleven of the eighteen tender points when pressed with a specific amount of force (equivalent of 4 kg. or 9 lbs.).  Those points which may be tender include:

Tender points of fibromyalgia exist at these nine bilateral muscle locations (This information was ained from about.com at the following website http://arthritis.about.com/od/fibromyalgia/g/tenderpoints.htm: )

  • Low Cervical Region: (front neck area) at anterior aspect of the interspaces between the transverse processes of C5-C7.
  • Second Rib: (front chest area) at second costochondral junctions.
  • Occiput: (back of the neck) at suboccipital muscle insertions.
  • Trapezius Muscle: (back shoulder area) at midpoint of the upper border.
  • Supraspinatus Muscle: (shoulder blade area) above the medial border of the scapular spine.
  • Lateral Epicondyle: (elbow area) 2 cm distal to the lateral epicondyle.
  • Gluteal: (rear end) at upper outer quadrant of the buttocks.
  • Greater Trochanter: (rear hip) posterior to the greater trochanteric prominence.
  • Knee: (knee area) at the medial fat pad proximal to the joint line.

The pain seems to manifest in a non-patterned way, or it can be explained in a more regional manner.  It is known to affect women , the elderly, children and men.  There are other symptoms also, such as:

    • Depression or mood fluctuations
    • Memory difficulties
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Night sweats
    • Chronic tiredness
    • Stress related soreness
    • Hot and cold intolerance
    • Weight fluctuation
    • Heart palpitations
    • In balance, causing falling
    • and more.

It is important to know that Fibromyalgia is treated using many different types of treatment combination.  Working with a doctor who specializes in Pain has been very helpful for me.  We were able to find just the right combination of medicine, physical regimine, and therapy to make my level of pain manageable.  If you would like to know more about Fibromyalgia or want to add additional information, please see the Forum for Fibromyalgia or join us in conversation in the chat room!
